Reps over Time

There is a simple formula for getting good at anything: reps over time.

Another word for this is called practice.

I don’t care if you want to learn the violin, a new language, a new career or get into the best shape of your life. Progress of any skill comes from putting in a sufficient amount of reps over a sufficient amount of time.

But you already knew this.

Probably.

You see, most of us know this in at least ONE area of our lives. Usually an area we have already succeeded in.

We know that our success in that area is due to the fact that we’ve been doing it for a long ass time.

Perhaps it’s your work. Or maybe it is an instrument, or signing, or a sport.

Whatever it is, your level of ability and success in that thing is directly related to the amount of time you’ve been doing it. The amount of repetitions you’ve put into that thing.

Am I right? Or am I right?

We know this.

But, because we’re already good at the thing, looking back at how long it took us to get here isn’t so clear.

For example; I’ve been coaching fitness for 15 years. 15 years!

But what does that really mean? 15 years? It sounds like a long time. It’s practically half of my life. But can I really understand that concept looking back?

Now what if I look forward? What if I want to get to a certain place in my life in 15 years.

What. The. F@ck!

That seems like forever away! I don’t want to spend 15 years just to get good at something…

Yet that’s the issue.

The length of time can seem daunting when we are looking forward at how long our fitness goals are going to take.

Not to mention most of us think about progress in months, not years.

But that’s how it goes. It’s just reps over time.

You’ve done it in one area, why can’t you do it in another area?

Usually it’s the time. We struggle to be willing to put in the time. We struggle to have the patience.

Well I only have one thing to say to that, and it’s my been my favourite quote for a very long time!

“Never give up on a dream just because of the time it will take to accomplish it. The time will pass anyway” ~ Earl Nightingale.

reps over time

The time is going to go by whether you want it to or not. And yes, you have plenty of time!

The only real question is whether or not you’ll put in your reps.

It Never Stops. Put In Your Reps. ?
